Focus of Safety wear on Australia/NZ region

With the expansion in industries, the need of protective clothing has now become mandatory in most of the safety protocols.

In Australia/NZ region, FR protective clothing is now a MUST for different segments which covers mainly energy & utility sector, Oil & Gas, mining, transportation, military and law enforcement, construction and also as a protection from Bushfire incidents.

Aus/NZ certification standards

Although the protective clothing standards are global and Australia/NZ region also follows this standards to ensure safety at work place. However, Australia faces highest level of UV radiation in world, which creates an additional need of UV protection. The global standards which are followed in this region are NFPA and also ISO norms in addition to few regional standards which suppliers have to ensure that FR fabrics qualifies to these requirements.

Global Flame Retardant Standards

NFPA 2112 Standard

Standard on flame-resistant garments for protection of industrial personnel against flash fire. For garments that reduce the severity of burn injuries resulting from short-duration exposure to flash fires – how the fabric continues to burn, char length, no melts or drips, as well as heat resistance, and shrinkage at high temperature

NFPA 70E Standard

NFPA 70E requirements for safe work practices to protect personnel by reducing exposure to major electrical hazards. Originally developed at OSHA’s request, NFPA 70E helps companies and employees avoid workplace injuries and fatalities due to shock, electrocution, arc flash and arc blast.

ISO 11612

Protective clothing – Clothing to protect against heat and flame. For fabrics’ protection against flame A1, including no melts and drips from the fabric, and against at least one other type of heat, B, C, D, or F. (B-convective heat, C-radiant heat, D-molten aluminum, E-molten Iron, F-contact heat)

ISO 11611

Protective clothing for use in welding and allied processes. For fabrics’ protecting against welding, and the critical test factors are: Flame spread, Impact of splatter (of metal), Heat transfer (radiation), Electrical resistance, and Tear, tensile and burst strength.

Regional standards

Although the protective clothing standards are global and Australia/NZ region also follows this standards to ensure safety at work place. However, Australia faces highest level of UV radiation in world, which creates an additional need of UV protection. The global standards which are followed in this region are NFPA and also ISO norms in addition to few regional standards which suppliers have to ensure that FR fabrics qualifies to these requirements.

AS/NZS 4602.1:2011-Retroreflective materials and devices for road traffic control purposes Part 4: High-visibility materials for safety garments

AS/NZS 1906.4:2010: High-visibility materials for safety garments

The AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 specifies high visibility safety garment requirements for people who may be exposed to high-risk situations. It defines the design of the garments, including the pattern options for the reflective tape, and the area for fluorescent materials.

The garments specified in this standard are classified as:
(a) Class D— for daytime use.
(b) Class N— for night use utilizing retroreflected light.
(c) Class D/N— for day and night use.

To comply with the AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 all outer fabrics used also need to adhere to AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 High-visibility materials for safety garments. The AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 standard specifies: test methods and the minimum luminance factor for retroreflective and fluorescent colour material (before and after washes).

AS/NZS 1906.4:2010: High-visibility materials for safety garments The AS/NZS 1020:1995 sets out the recommendations for controlling static electricity that may be generated incidentally by processes or activities you may have to perform, therefore protecting you from a potential shock. At the clothing apparel section, you will find suitable garments manufactured in 100% cotton, 50% cotton / 50% polyester blended, and 65% polyester / 35% viscose blended.

Most Workit garments are created from fabrics based on cotton, resulting in antistatic materials; however, always check the composition of the workwear!

AS/NZS 4399: 1999: Sun protective clothing – Evaluation and classification The AS/NZS 4399:1999 defines the methodology to test fabric, and classifies how protective a fabric is against the ultraviolet radiation transmitted through it.

All Workit fabrics are rated 50+ UPF Sun Protection, the highest protection in the range defined by this standard.

Wildland AS/NZS 4824:2006 Protective clothing for firefighters—Requirements and test methods for protective clothing used for Wildland firefighting
These Standards specify the minimum requirements and test methods for assessing protective clothing that is intended to be worn by fire service personnel. Retro-reflective and/or fluorescent trims are submitted to flame spread and heat resistance tests as well as luminous intensity after heat exposure.
